Day 16

FEBRUARY | 2023

Tajikistan

PRAYER FOR THIS COUNTRY

Due to the energy crisis, the government had been suspending power from 10pm until 5am each day. However the severe cold winter has prompted the lifting of this power cut. Praise God for this grace shown to the people. Declare over the people of Tajikistan that the Loving Father is a good shepherd. With Him, we lack nothing. He makes us lie down in green pastures, He leads us beside quiet waters, He refreshes souls. He guides the people of Tajikistan along the right paths for His name’s sake. Pray that those who are seeking for Truth, may find hope and rest in Christ alone (The Bible, Psalm 23:1-3).

MORE ABOUT THIS COUNTRY

Central Asia’s poorest nation, Tajikistan has never recovered from the Soviet era. After five years of civil war following the 1991 Soviet collapse, an UN-brokered peace deal resulted. Secular forces dominate, but economic stability hasn’t returned. Tajikistan voted to allow its president to rule indefinitely. Each year greater legislative restrictions oppress the Tajik masses. Secular forces also dictate religious law. Although the constitution guarantees religious freedom, oppression is widespread. Literature confiscation is a primary tool the government uses against Christians. Churches must register to be legal, a near impossible task. However, both registered and unregistered church gatherings continue to take place.

Israel

PRAYER FOR THIS COUNTRY

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his government plans to charge ahead with a proposal to change the country’s judicial system, despite fierce criticism from top legal officials. Netanyahu’s comments came after opponents of the plan held nationwide protests. Despite the opposition, Netanyahu told a meeting of his Cabinet that voters cast their ballots in the November elections in support of his campaign promise to modify the justice system. Pray that legislating the reforms will correct what needs correcting and totally protect individual rights and restore the public’s faith in the justice system. Pray that Israelites heed to the voice and laws of  God and obey the King of kings, the Lord Jesus Christ (The Bible, Psalm 22:28).

MORE ABOUT THIS COUNTRY

Israel is a republic with a president as head of state. However, the president’s powers are largely ceremonial; the prime minister holds the executive power. The incumbent president is Isaac Herzog, who took office on 7 July 2021, and Yair Lapid of Yesh Atid is the prime minister from 1 July 2022. A densely-populated country on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea, Israel is the only state in the world with a majority Jewish population. It has been locked in conflict with the Palestinians and its Arab neighbors over ownership of land considered holy by many Jews, Christians, and Muslims since its creation in 1948. The militant Islamic group Hamas reinforced its power in Gaza in June 2007. Hamas, frustrated with the restrictions placed on them by Israel, fired rockets close to Jerusalem. Israel retaliated. Violent clashes over Jerusalem escalated dramatically with Gaza, and many were killed by Israeli airstrikes launched after Palestinian militant groups fired rockets close to Jerusalem.
