Following Niger’s July 2023 coup, the military junta wrongfully detained dozens of people, including former officials, activists, and journalists. Many were arrested without due process, denied fair trials, and held in secret or high-security prisons under fabricated charges like “threatening state security.” Civilians were unjustly brought before military courts. Former President Mohamed Bazoum and his wife remain in detention at the presidential palace despite calls for their release by the UN, which declared their imprisonment a violation of international law. Prominent activist Moussa Tiangari also remains jailed on questionable terrorism charges. While the recent release of 50 detainees is a positive step, the junta must free all those imprisoned for political reasons and respect basic rights and legal standards.
Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of all individuals in Niger who have been wrongfully imprisoned for political reasons. Pray for justice to prevail in the nation. (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).
Pray for the democratic governance in Niger that respects the rights and freedom of its citizens. Pray for the end of violence, oppression in the nation. Pray for the LORD’s divine peace and protection for all the Nigeriens (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:3-4).
