Unexploded bombs from the Vietnam War continue to haunt the people of Laos, with an estimated 30% of the 2 million tons of explosives dropped between 1964 and 1973 failing to detonate. These remnants, including cluster bombs and mines, pose a constant threat to rural communities, particularly farmers and children. UXO (unexploded ordnance) has claimed over 20,000 lives since the war’s end, with children making up 40% of the fatalities. Despite years of U.S. aid to clear these bombs, progress remains slow, with around 80 million bombs still scattered across the country. The lack of continued support, especially after the freeze on U.S. foreign aid in 2020, has left many vulnerable, increasing the risk of accidents and deaths.
Pray for renewed and continued international support and resources to clear the dangerous remnants of war that still threaten innocent lives in Laos. Pray for wise counsel and protection for the organizations working tirelessly to bring safety and peace to the communities (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 20:18).
Pray for divine protection upon all the people, especially farmers and children, affected by unexploded ordnance in Laos. Pray for physical and spiritual healing for the victims of war and its remnant in the country. (The Holy Bible, 2 Samuel 22:3).
