Türkish photojournalist Yasin Akgul was arrested at home by police on 23 March’2025 as part of mass anti-government demonstrations that followed opposition mayor Ekrem Imamoglu’s detention. Akgul, a veteran photographer, was photographing the unrest. He has been accused of attending unauthorized rallies and is sure that the target is journalists covering the demonstrations. Several freelance journalists stopped working out of fear in the wake of the crackdown. More than 2,000 have been detained, including members of the opposition and students. Human Rights Watch reports that the government is suppressing dissent, both in its attacks on the media and public figures. Opposition members cite plans to stage further protests calling for early polls despite the increased risk of arrest.

Pray for the protection of journalists like Yasin Akgul, who risk their lives to bring truth to the world, even amidst harsh repression. Pray for more press freedom in Türkiye (The Holy Bible, Job 36:15).

Pray for the immediate release of all the imprisoned protesters, including students and opposition members in Türkiye. Pray for justice and peace to prevail in the nation (The Holy Bible, Psalm 50:15).
