Following the regime collapse of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, Syrians have started enjoying newfound freedom, although with future anxieties. Following Assad’s coup, the nation is in a massive transformation. Individuals have come back from abroad, and scholars and activists are openly talking about politics and culture. Fears over increased Islamic dominance within the new government, however, persist, as does the question of the government’s allegiance to democracy. There are tensions regarding the concentration of authority and the place of Islam in government, with issues of concern regarding women’s rights and religious freedom. While others see these developments as promising, others fear a slide back into dictatorship. The future of Syria’s political system is unclear.
Sovereign God, we pray for Your divine counsel and wisdom for the leaders in Syria as they rebuild the nation and democracy. Raise leaders committed to justice, truth, integrity, and servant-hearted governance (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).
Pray for the new system of government to protect and uphold the rights and freedoms of all Syrians, especially women and religious minorities in the nation. Pray for the LORD’s peace and healing for all the communities in the country to eradicate political and religious differences (The Holy Bible, Jeremiah 33:7).
