North Korea is facing critical food insecurity, as almost 46% of its population is undernourished, corresponding to about 11.8 million individuals. This is due to ancient agricultural infrastructure, poor access to modern farm technology, and seasonal natural disasters. The regime’s re-imposition of control over food distribution, such as limiting private markets and a monopoly over staples like rice and corn, has worsened the crisis. In addition, poor sanitation and hygiene lead to malnutrition and disease. North Korea is one of the 30 high-burden tuberculosis countries on the World Health Organization’s list, and vaccine rates have dramatically dropped since the COVID-19 outbreak. Global humanitarian action is also hampered by restricted access and a shortage of funds, where only 24% of last year’s appeal has been achieved.

Jehovah Jireh, we cry out for the millions in North Korea suffering from hunger and undernourishment. Open doors for humanitarian aid to reach the people in need at the right time (The Holy Bible, Psalm 146:7).

Jehovah Rapha, restore health to the sick and vulnerable battling diseases and malnutrition in North Korea, especially the children and elderly. Heal the nation, O LORD! (The Holy Bible, 2 Chronicles 7:14).
