Rising tensions in South Sudan, triggered by the 26 March arrest of Vice-President Riek Machar, threaten to plunge the country back into civil war. The arrest collapsed the fragile 2018 peace agreement, which reinstated Machar in a united government after the 2013-2018 civil war. Key issues, including the formation of a unified army and holding elections, remain unresolved. Ethnic divisions between President Salva Kiir (Dinka) and Machar (Nuer), coupled with delayed elections, fueled the crisis. The White Army militia’s recent clashes with the army have escalated tensions. Regional actors, including Uganda, have attempted to mediate, but efforts have been insufficient. While Western nations urge de-escalation, the situation remains unstable, and the country faces the risk of renewed civil conflict.

Pray for political stability in South Sudan. Pray for the success of the efforts of the international authorities for the de-escalation of the conflict in the country (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 24:6).

Pray against ethnic divisions in South Sudan. Pray for the LORD’s love to fill the hearts and minds of the leaders and the South Sudanese people (The Holy Bible, Galatians 3:28).
