Myanmar: Retailers and business owners have reported that significant damage and import restrictions have led to a critical shortage of steel, cement, and other materials essential for reconstruction and repairs following last month’s earthquake.
According to employees in the construction sector, bags of cement that were priced at approximately 20,000 kyat (US $4.50) in early 2025 are now hard to find and cost between 40,000 and 50,000 kyat (US $9 to $11) when available.
This current market price represents an increase of at least eight times the previous cost of 5,000 kyat per bag, which was typical before the 2021 coup. These prices reflect the market situation in Yangon, which is distant from the earthquake’s epicenter, and are likely even higher in the more severely affected regions of central Myanmar. Cement is scarce even in retail outlets within the domestic market.
- Lord, we pray that You will guide this nation’s leaders to make wise decisions about rebuilding and development. We ask for Your provision of necessary resources, both material and human support (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 58:12).
- Lord, we specially pray for the cement industry and other materials that are used for construction. Help all businesses to adhere to ethical norms and not plunder the less privileged when they are helpless. Heal the nation (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 61:4).
