Manahel al-Otaibi, a 30-year-old Saudi woman and fitness instructor, has been missing since December 15, 2024, after being sentenced to 11 years in prison for advocating women’s rights online. Her family, unable to reach her, fears for her safety, recalling past abuses including torture, solitary confinement, and medical neglect. Manahel was convicted in a secret court hearing for calling for the end of male guardianship, wearing “indecent clothes,” and shopping without an abaya. Diagnosed with a specific medical condition, her health has worsened in detention. Her sister Mariam, also a women’s rights activist, was previously jailed and now faces restrictions, while another sister, Fawzia, fled the country fearing arrest. The case highlights a wider pattern in Saudi Arabia where individuals face severe punishment for peaceful expression on social media and advocating basic rights.
Sovereign LORD, we cry out for justice, protection, and freedom for Manahel and others who are suffering for standing up for truth and freedom. Stir the hearts of the leaders in Saudi Arabia to act in righteousness and mercy, for nothing is impossible for You (The Holy Bible, Luke 1:37).
Papa GOD, we pray for the Manahel’s family as they live with fear, uncertainty, and pain of separation. Bless them with supernatural strength and hope as they advocate for her release and safety. Protect them, especially Manahel’s sisters, from further harm. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 37:6).
