Eritrea’s national service program amounts to indefinite forced military or civil labor. All citizens aged 18 to 40 are required to undergo military training at the Sawa camp, followed by what is meant to be 18 months of service. In reality, many serve indefinitely, often for years or even decades, without pay or freedom to leave. This system applies to both men and women, and exemptions are rare. The government uses mass roundups, known as gifa, to catch those trying to escape recruitment, including schoolchildren and older reservists. National service dominates Eritrean life, dictating where people live, work, and whether they can remain with their families. Many Eritreans have fled the country to escape this system, which human rights groups equate with modern-day slavery.

Pray against oppression and forced military service for all citizens in Eritrea. Pray for the international authorities to urge the Eritrean government to stop this modern-day slavery, challenge injustice, and lead the way to liberty (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 31:9).

Almighty GOD, raise Deborahs, Baraks, and Gideons among the Eritrean people to fight for their rights and freedom. Raise the victory banner for the oppressed in the country. (The Holy Bible, Judges 6:14).
