South Sudan is experiencing mounting violence between the national military and the opposition SPLA-IO militia allied to First Vice President Riek Machar, killing at least 75 civilians and displacing thousands. The violence, which has been rekindled since February with White Army militia attacks and intensified fighting in Jonglei and Upper Nile states, risks destroying the fragile 2018 peace deal. In addition to the violence, at least 55 top SPLA-IO officials, political and military leaders alike, have been arrested without due process, causing fear of political repression. There have been demands for all authorities to respect the peace agreement, protect civilians, and enable humanitarian access. A serious warning regarding hate speech has also been issued, threatening to exacerbate the conflict and further entrench South Sudan’s already extreme humanitarian crisis. Efforts towards stabilizing the nation are still critical to prevent further decline.

Pray for the warring parties in South Sudan to uphold the 2018 peace agreement. Pray for the authorities to work in one accord to stabilize the country. (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).

Pray for divine protection and healing upon all the people facing uncertainty and violence in South Sudan. Pray for improved humanitarian access to all the people in need in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:14).
