Day 6
Guinea
The trial over a 2009 massacre in Guinea resumed following a recent jailbreak that saw armed commandos free ex-dictator Moussa Dadis Camara and three others, leaving nine dead. Dadis Camara and three of the accused were re-captured on the same day.
The incident, which occurred nine days ago, raised concerns about the possible interruption of the trial, which opened in 2022 after more than a decade-long wait for victims. The massacre began in a stadium in the suburbs of the capital, Conakry, where tens of thousands of opposition supporters had gathered for a rally. According to the UN-mandated Commission of Inquiry, at least 156 people died, and hundreds were injured. The tragedy includes the rape of at least 109 women. Pray for the people of Guinea to have encounters with Jesus Christ. Pray for the leaders to repent for their sins and fear God (The Bible, Proverbs 8:13).

Guinea, relatively a peaceful country, is jolted by the coups. Incumbent Mamady Doumbouya is the president since 1 October 2021. Incumbent Bernard Gomou is the prime minister since 17 July 2022. Experiments with socialism and a two-year rule by a junta have taken their toll on prospects for development. The 2010 election ushered in a decade of civilian rule but led to violent ethnic clashes as well. In addition, hundreds of thousands of refugees from Liberia and Sierra Leone have strained Guinea’s struggling economy. The instability has generated suspicion and ethnic tension – as well as accusations between neighbors of attempts at destabilization and border attacks. Muslim converts to Christianity fear family reactions and harassment by the extremists.

Day 6
Thailand
Praise God for a group of Christian Believers who started a discipleship group. The group is made up of about 20 young professionals in their 20s. They meet to share a meal, study the Bible, and have fun. This safe and informal environment means that people feel free to bring along friends who are not yet following Jesus. As they read and discuss the Bible passages, learning what they teach and how they apply to their lives, the young people become excited about reading the Bible in their own time. Pray that this group will grow and multiply into many groups (The Bible, Mark 4:8).

Thailand means “Land of the free;” however, many are in bondage. Despite a relatively stable and industrialized economy, slavery, sex tourism and trafficking, drugs, and organized crime are rampant. A constitutional monarchy since 1932, a new king ascended the throne at the end of 2016 and signed a new military-drafted constitution in 2017 designed to pave the way for a return to democracy after numerous coups. However, critics say the new constitution has only strengthened the sweeping, unchecked, and unaccountable military powers. A public protest movement was active during 2020 -2021 but declined in 2022 due to an increasing climate of fear and persecution created by the Thai government. Though Protestant missionaries have been working in Thailand for 200 years, 88 percent of Thailand remains unreached with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
