Media freedom in Uzbekistan saw a brief period of expansion early in Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s presidency, raising hopes for greater press independence. However, this was followed by a swift regression, marked by crackdowns on critical journalists and bloggers. Increasing censorship and harassment have limited independent reporting, undermining public accountability. The regime has shown intolerance toward dissenting voices, and the media landscape remains tightly controlled. Despite initial reform rhetoric, the erosion of media freedoms reflects the administration’s strategy to control public discourse and limit transparency, signaling the persistence of authoritarian practices in the country.
LORD, we pray for more tolerance towards the Press and dissident voices in Uzbekistan. We pray for divine protection upon all the journalists and activists to do their jobs without any restrictions (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 21:15).
Sovereign LORD, we pray that the Uzbek authorities who oppress and cover the truth may be held accountable. We pray for the citizens to encounter justice, transparency and freedom (The Holy Bible, Amos 5:24).
