Lebanon’s municipal elections happened after a long war with Israel and ongoing attacks in the south. Even though Hezbollah lost some of its strength, it and its ally Amal still won many seats, demonstrating their strong support among Shia voters. Some reformist candidates won a few seats, but they faced numerous challenges, including limited funding, a short campaign period, and the spread of fake news. Voter turnout was low in most areas, especially in the south and places damaged by war. Many people are still angry about the poor economy, lack of electricity, and slow rebuilding. The new reformist government, led by Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, wants change, but old, powerful parties still control most of the system. Now, people are watching next year’s parliamentary elections to see if real change is possible or if the same leaders will stay in power.
Pray for political stability in Lebanon. Pray for elected candidates to work towards the development of the lives and livelihoods of the citizens (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:11).
Pray for wise counsel for the Lebanese authorities to tackle the political rivalries and to take immediate action for economic growth. Pray for the government to take action to provide all the basic needs and benefits of the citizens (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).
