Indonesia’s death sentences continue to rise, contributing significantly to global execution figures. In 2024, 1,518 executions were recorded globally, a 32% increase from 2023. Despite this rise, only 15 countries carried out executions, the lowest number in recent years. Indonesia, which has not executed anyone since 2016, sentenced 85 people to death in 2024, primarily for drug-related offenses. Malaysia took a significant step in 2023 by abolishing the mandatory death penalty, setting an example for neighboring countries. With 113 nations worldwide having fully abolished capital punishment, there is a growing global shift toward more humane justice systems. Indonesia is being called to align with this movement and reconsider its use of the death penalty.
Pray for Indonesia’s lawmakers to annul the practice of death sentences. Pray for all the civilians to have access to the right to live and other rights and freedoms in the country (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 29:4).
Pray for the international communities’ advocacy to abolish the practice of execution in Indonesia. Pray for the individuals on death row, especially those imprisoned for non-violent offenses, to have hope and a future (The Holy Bible, Job 5:16).
