South Sudan’s main opposition group has called for an international investigation into alleged human rights abuses following recent clashes between government troops and rebel militias loyal to Riek Machar, the country’s former vice president. Since March, fighting in the north has intensified, with government forces accused of using airstrikes, including incendiary weapons, against opposition-held areas like Nasir, a Machar stronghold. Human Rights Watch reported numerous casualties and widespread destruction from these attacks. The violence threatens the 2018 peace deal between Machar and President Salva Kiir, whose political rivalry has repeatedly endangered peace in the country. The government has not commented on the allegations, and Machar remains under house arrest, along with many of his supporters.

Pray for the international authorities to take immediate action to restore peace and stability in South Sudan. Pray for justice and accountability for those responsible for human rights violations in the country (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 21:3).

Sovereign LORD, we plead for Your divine protection for all the innocent civilians from harm and violence in South Sudan. We plead for Your divine provision for the refuge and safety of civilians caught in the crossfire of conflict in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 9:9).
