The Khmer are the main ethnic group in Cambodia and speak the Khmer language. They once ruled much of Southeast Asia but now mostly live in Cambodia after losing wars in the 1200s. Cambodia became independent from France in 1953 but later suffered under the violent Khmer Rouge. Today, Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy but is mostly run by one political party. Most Khmer people farm rice and raise animals, but many young people move to cities for work. Some struggle in cities, taking low-paying jobs or falling into dangerous trades.
The Khmer mainly practice Buddhism mixed with Hindu and spirit beliefs. Buddhism is part of their identity, even though many are not deeply familiar with its teachings. They celebrate important Buddhist holidays like Vesak and Bodhi Day with special traditions.

Abba Father, bless the Khmer people with peace, hope, and a future full of Your love (The Bible, Jeremiah 29:11).

Lord, protect the young Khmer seeking a better life, and guide them to safe and good paths (The Bible, Psalm 32:8).
