On March 20, 2025, Indonesia’s parliament approved changes to the 2004 armed forces law, allowing more active-duty military members to hold civilian roles. Human rights groups fear this will bring back the military’s past political influence under Soeharto and weaken democratic controls. The amendments let military personnel work in civilian agencies like the Attorney General’s Office and disaster management, without retiring first. Critics say this risks abuse and a lack of accountability, especially since military courts handle crimes by soldiers. Women’s groups are also worried, as military courts may not fairly address sexual violence cases. Over 180 civil groups are protesting the law, urging President Prabowo to delay it and include public input before moving forward.
Pray for the authorities to take action to protect democracy and civilian rights in Indonesia. Pray for the lawmakers to reconsider and revoke the amendments to the law (The Holy Bible, Micah 6:8).
Pray for the judiciary system in Indonesia to uphold transparency, fairness, and truth without any partiality. Pray for justice to be served for all marginalized civilians, especially women in the country (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:19).
