Egypt: Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, conducted a virtual meeting with France’s Minister for Ecological Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, to enhance collaboration in preparation for the United Nations Ocean Conference. The discussion also addressed the ongoing international talks aimed at establishing a legally binding treaty to combat plastic pollution under the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC).
Fouad reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to an equitable and open deal that recognizes the idea of shared but distinct responsibilities and guarantees funding for developing countries to meet their environmental targets. She underlined that although plastic is essential in many fields, its detrimental effects must be minimized by making investments in recycling technologies and cutting back on wasteful use.
Additionally, she pointed out Egypt’s recent reforms, including a Cabinet decision that implements extended producer responsibility and fees on single-use plastic bags, which followed two years of discussions with industry stakeholders.
- Lord, we pray for your guidance in finding solutions to the plastic pollution crisis in Egypt. Help us to be responsible stewards of Your creation and to reduce our plastic footprint (The Holy Bible, Psalms 24:1).
- Pray for the development of effective waste management systems in Egypt. Pray for policies that promote recycling and minimize environmental harm. Pray for solutions to address the issue of single-use plastics, which are a major contributor to pollution (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 24:4).
