Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, 78, was admitted to a hospital in Kuala Lumpur on May 27, 2025, after feeling weak during the ASEAN Summit. He was taken to Malaysia’s National Heart Institute for observation and treatment. The office of the Malaysian Prime Minister confirmed that the Sultan is stable and resting under medical care. As one of the longest-serving monarchs in the world, having ruled Brunei since 1967, his unexpected hospitalization stirred the public due to his pivotal role in the country’s governance and development. But Malaysian and Bruneian officials alike have assured the public that the Sultan is fine and being closely watched. The palace did not come out with detailed information about his medical condition but stated that his condition was not life-threatening. The Sultan will resume his work after full recovery. No succession plans have been revealed.
