BHUTAN: Bhutan is facing growing concerns over suicide and mental health, with suicide remaining the country’s sixth leading cause of death. Reports show that suicide attempts and deaths continue to rise, prompting the government to make prevention a national priority. Through the National Mental Health Strategy 1.0 (2025), led by the PEMA Secretariat, Bhutan is working to integrate mental health support into national development efforts. The government has expanded counselling services in schools and rehabilitation programs for vulnerable youth, helping reduce student suicide cases in 2025. Experts say psychiatric inpatients face a significantly higher suicide risk, highlighting the need for stronger screening, early intervention, improved inpatient care, and coordinated national prevention strategies. Researchers and psychiatrists also emphasized the importance of tools like ASQ screening to identify people at risk and provide timely mental health support.
Abba Father, bring comfort, healing, and hope to those struggling with depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Amen (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:18).
Lord, help communities and leaders work together with compassion to support those facing mental health struggles. Amen (The Holy Bible, Galatians 6:2).
