MYANMAR: Voting for the junta-organized election has started for those living overseas, with Myanmar embassies in various countries announcing dates for expatriates to cast their ballots. The regime is urging migrants to take part, even though many people believe the elections are not valid. In the past, workers came from all over the country to vote, but now the embassy is quiet. Many individuals are expressing their frustration online about the embassy’s heavy taxes on migrant workers while offering no assistance to citizens affected by floods.
According to the junta’s 2024 census, over 1.12 million Myanmar citizens live abroad, with 69 percent residing in Thailand. However, this census left out around 19.2 million people living in conflict areas, suggesting that the actual number of Myanmar nationals overseas is likely much higher. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing acknowledged during the census launch that more young people are migrating. Civil society groups estimate that as many as 5 million Myanmar nationals may currently be in Thailand, both legally and illegally.
- Pray that truth and justice will prevail in Myanmar, especially for citizens abroad who feel unheard or pressured by an election they do not trust. Ask God to protect migrant workers from exploitation, unfair taxation, and neglect, and to give them strength and wisdom in this difficult season (The Holy Bible, Psalm 37:28).
- Lift up the millions of Myanmar nationals displaced by conflict or forced to migrate. Pray that God will provide safety, provision, and dignity—especially for those in Thailand and those uncounted in conflict zones. Ask that leaders, communities, and international organizations will show compassion and act with integrity (The Holy Bible, Zachariah 7:10).
