Violence against civilians in South Sudan surged by 51% in 2024, according to a new UNMISS report, with 1,019 incidents impacting 3,657 people. These included 1,561 killings, 1,299 injuries, 551 abductions, including nine aid workers, and 246 cases of conflict-related sexual violence. Most violence stemmed from community-based militias, with Warrap state recording the highest civilian casualties and Western Equatoria reporting the most sexual violence. Central Equatoria saw the most abductions, largely linked to splinter groups. UNMISS urged national and local authorities to act urgently to prevent further harm, promote reconciliation, and hold perpetrators accountable. The report comes amid rising political tensions and fears of renewed conflict following the arrest of Vice-President Riek Machar and new military mobilizations.

Pray for the LORD’s intervention in South Sudan to stop the increasing violence against innocent civilians. Pray for peace and protection for all the South Sudanese people amidst the current political unrest in the country. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 9:19).

Pray for divine wisdom for the authorities involved in the peace talks to promote reconciliation and peace in South Sudan. Pray for the divine peace to prevail in the nation. (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 16:7).
