In May 2025, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), along with 31 other organizations, urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to renew the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on Eritrea. This call highlights ongoing human rights violations in the country, including the arbitrary detention of journalists, severe media restrictions, and enforced disappearances. Eritrea remains one of the most censored nations globally, with 16 journalists imprisoned without trial, some since 2001. The government has failed to provide evidence of their well-being or to allow independent investigations. Despite international pressure, Eritrean authorities continue to dismiss calls for reform and have not cooperated with UN mechanisms. The coalition of organizations emphasizes the need for continued scrutiny to address these abuses and to hold the Eritrean government accountable for its human rights record.
Pray for the Eritrean authorities to abide by international law and uphold the rights and freedoms of civilians. Pray for the international authorities to take immediate action against those who violate human rights in Eritrea (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 26:7).
Pray for divine protection upon all the people, including rights defenders and journalists, in Eritrea. Pray for more press freedom and freedom of expression in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:4).
