Somalia: The authorities in the SSC-Khatumo region of northern Somalia released 25 prisoners of war from Somaliland, a gesture aimed at fostering goodwill during a significant visit by Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre.

This release, described as a unilateral act of goodwill, was made at the formal request of Somalia’s federal government, as stated by SSC leader Abdulkadir Firdhiye. He clarified that this decision was not part of a prisoner exchange with Somaliland, even though both parties have hundreds of detainees following months of intense conflict.

The Somali government hopes this action could facilitate dialogue between SSC-Khatumo and Somaliland, potentially leading to broader negotiations, including a comprehensive prisoner swap.

The federal government in Mogadishu views this gesture as a crucial step toward reducing tensions, although disputes over territory continue to create a charged atmosphere.

  • Lord, we pray for the released prisoners; give them the grace and mercy to heal from their past traumas and the ability to live a transformed life (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 51:14).
  • Lord, we pray for a spirit of unity and understanding between SSC Khatumo and Somalia, promoting cooperation and peaceful resolutions to border-related issues (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 16:9).
