Senegal: A lawmaker has officially suggested charging former President Macky Sall with high treason. This proposal comes after the Court of Auditors revealed serious financial misconduct during Sall’s presidency from 2019 to 2023, including allegations of forged documents, embezzlement, money laundering, and illicit enrichment.

Current Justice Minister Ousmane Diagne confirmed that the investigation is currently focused on financial crimes, but he did not dismiss the possibility of future high treason charges if enough evidence is found.

According to Senegal’s Constitution, a former president can only be prosecuted for high treason with parliamentary approval and a trial by the High Court of Justice.

This proposal aligns with previous calls from civil society and opposition groups for accountability. If the National Assembly approves it, it could lead to an unprecedented legal case in Senegal’s democratic history.

  • We pray for the former President Macky Sall, Lord. We know of all his shortcomings. May Your divine justice and fairness be upheld in all of the proceedings against him (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 16:1).
  • Lord, we pray that the churches in Senegal would grow in faith and boldness and that it would bring a positive influence on the nation in raising just and upright leaders (The Holy Bible, Hebrews 13:7).
