South Sudan is reeling in financial turmoil. Government employees, including the armed forces, have not been paid for months. A vast majority of these unpaid employees do not go to work anymore and crippling government services. Without significant foreign investment, the population depends heavily on these government services.
South Sudan is oil-rich; however, the country depends on Sudan to pipeline crude oil and generate revenue. The plan was working until the civil war broke out in Sudan. The South Sudanese oil pipelines became targets of all warring factions in Sudan. In effect, it halted the operations of the South Sudan government machinery.
Despite the challenging times, South Sudan is showing signs of economic revival. The recovery is not due to government reform or foreign aid influx. It stems from the resilience of small business owners and vendors. Their perseverance under extreme hardship to sustain their businesses is opening the scope for the economy to revive.
- Sustainability: Let us pray for the small business owners and vendors in South Sudan. Let us pray that their supply lines flow smoothly (The Bible, Proverbs 16:11, Isaiah 1:31).
- Prosperity: Let us pray for God to raise more buyers for the products of the small businesses in South Sudan to create a supernatural economic revival (The Bible, Jeremiah 29:11, Isaiah 54:17).
- Protection: Let us pray for Psalm 91 protection from criminal elements for small businesses/vendors – owners, workers, and families.
