Eritrea remains one of the most repressive countries in the world. Since gaining independence in 1993, President Isaias Afwerki has ruled without elections, a ratified constitution, or political opposition. The country has no freedom of press or expression, with media tightly controlled and independent journalists often jailed or disappeared. Religious freedom is severely restricted—only four state-sanctioned religions are allowed, and followers of other denominations face arrest and imprisonment. The government maintains extensive surveillance over its population, and arbitrary arrests are common. Even Eritreans living abroad face repression, as they must pay a 2% income tax to maintain ties with their homeland. Families of emigrants who refuse can face retaliation, including property loss, fines, or detention.
Pray against the repressive regime in Eritrea. Pray for the Holy Spirit of GOD to turn the hearts and minds of the Eritrean authorities towards Truth, justice, and righteousness (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 21:1).
Pray for the Eritrean government to lift the restrictions on innocent civilians in their homeland and abroad. Pray for the government to uphold the rights and freedom of the Eritreans (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 20:28).
Pray for religious freedom in Eritrea. Pray for divine protection upon all the Christians in the country. Pray for the immediate release of all the imprisoned Eritrean believers (The Holy Bible, Psalm 119:116).
