South Sudan’s military has recaptured the strategic town of Nasir from the White Army militia without direct combat amid escalating political tensions following the house arrest of First Vice President Riek Machar. The White Army, reportedly linked to Machar, claimed 17 deaths from nearby bombardments. Machar’s SPLM-IO party is fragmenting, with one faction naming a temporary leader, though the armed wing remains loyal to him. The fragile power-sharing deal between President Salva Kiir and Machar, established after the 2018 peace agreement, now appears in jeopardy. Uganda has intervened militarily, claiming to have killed 1,500 White Army fighters. While the recapture of Nasir is a win for Kiir’s government, the underlying political crisis risks renewed ethnic conflict in the country.
Sovereign GOD, soften the hearts of leaders in South Sudan and guide them towards oneness and reconciliation. We pray for Your healing power across the nation to end the raging political and ethnic divisions (The Holy Bible, Psalm 133:1).
Father GOD, we pray for all the innocent civilians in South Sudan facing instability and uncertainty. LORD, bring comfort to those who mourn, healing to the wounded, and protection to the vulnerable (The Holy Bible, Psalm 62:8).
