More than 100 individuals lost their lives while numerous others are still missing following torrential rains that caused the River Niger to overflow in central Nigeria’s Niger state. People were swept away, and more than 3,000 houses were submerged. Rescue operations are still underway, with the government issuing an alert that the number of fatalities might increase as bodies float downstream. Mokwa, a major commercial town, is located in an area with some major dams that play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s power generation. Repeated floods have hit the state this year, with previous occurrences leveling thousands of farms. The experts blame the increasing effect of floods on climate change, inadequate infrastructure, and poor coordination in water management. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency had issued warnings ahead of the storm, but many communities remain vulnerable. Humanitarian needs are escalating as displaced households are seeking shelter and assistance. Environmentalists are demanding immediate flood protection and climate adaptation efforts.
Pray for divine protection and provision for all the flood victims in Nigeria. Pray for them to have immediate access to food, shelter, and other basic needs (The Holy Bible, Lamentations 3:56).
Pray for the Nigerian government to take immediate action to improve the infrastructure and water management. Pray for the authorities to implement more effective measures to safeguard the safety of the citizens during deadly calamities (The Holy Bible, Psalm 33:20).
