Christians in Laos are brutally persecuted, particularly in rural settings where the government collaborates with Buddhist monks to suppress religious minorities. Christianity is considered a threat by the Communist regime, tending to target converts from ethnic minorities. In 2023, 79 Christian families in Khammouane Province were driven out and forced to abandon their religion. Permission for churches to open is often withheld, and believers risk detention, forced eviction, and harassment. Because of state repression and censorship, these abuses are infrequently known internationally. The political system and cultural identification with Buddhism of Laos are aggravated by discrimination, rendering Christians at risk. Despite the hostility, Christianity quietly expands. Laotian believers acknowledge the strength of their faith in the universality of Christianity, though at present they are still marginalized or threatened with repressive measures for practicing or publicizing their religion.
Pray for Christians in Laos who are facing persecution. May the ‘Body of Christ’ in the country experience healing, unity, and a path to lasting peace (The Holy Bible, Matthew 21:44).
LORD, we pray for more religious tolerance in Laos. We pray for the authorities to take action to protect religious minorities from attacks. We pray that Your Love breaks down the walls of division and hatred (The Holy Bible, Psalm 82:3).
