West Bank: During most Easter holidays, the cobblestone streets of Bethlehem, the West Bank town celebrated as the birthplace of Jesus, would be filled with tourists. Pilgrims and visitors used to crowd the souvenir shops, which were essential for local craftsmen. However, since the outbreak of Israel’s conflict with Gaza in October 2023, the usual influx of tourists has come to a halt.

Attalah Zacharia, an experienced olive wood carver, now depends heavily on exports to Europe and the United States. Yet, this source of income is also at risk due to newly imposed US tariffs that threaten to cut off the few remaining sales. Easter and Christmas are typically peak seasons for Bethlehem, where tourism contributes to 70 percent of the city’s annual revenue.

“Bethlehem as a tourist destination has gone through a very challenging period over the past two years,” stated Anton Salman, the mayor of the city. In the absence of visitors, the town’s artisan workshops have become hauntingly quiet.

  • Lord, we lift up to You the artisans of Bethlehem who have lost their livelihoods due to the conflict and the decline in tourism. We ask for Your provision for their families, for food, shelter, and everything they need to survive. Give them strength and resilience to cope with their hardships. Guide them in finding ways to earn a living and to rebuild their lives (The Holy Bible, Exodus 35:30).
  • Lord, May the new tariffs imposed not be a threat to them. Grant wisdom to leaders and those in power to make decisions that will bring peace and prosperity. May your love and compassion be with them always (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 64:8).
