Both Pakistan and Iran complain that transnational militant groups have increased cross-border terrorist attacks from Afghan sanctuaries since the Taliban reclaimed power in Kabul in 2021. Iranian authorities have blamed an Afghan-based regional Islamic State affiliate known as Islamic State-Khorasan for recent high-profile terrorist attacks inside Iran. Tehran and Islamabad pledged they would increase joint efforts against Afghanistan’s terrorism threat and urged Afghanistan’s hardline Taliban government to involve all Afghans in basic decision-making. ![]()

Many are pushed into debt due to these hurdles, with over 40% of surveyed women reporting financial strain. Movement restrictions further complicate matters, with nearly three-quarters of respondents unable to travel freely without a male companion. Additionally, access to loans from banks or microfinance institutions is severely limited, with only a small fraction of women receiving financial assistance through these channels.![]()

Heavy flooding from seasonal rains has also killed at least 50 people in Afghanistan and injured 36 others over recent days, the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA) reported. More than 600 houses were damaged or destroyed while about 200 livestock died, the Taliban authorities said earlier. The flooding also damaged large areas of agricultural land and more than 85km (53 miles) of roads. Afghanistan has provided aid to nearly 23,000 families, with flash floods reported in 20 of the country’s 34 provinces. The storms add to the challenges facing Afghanistan, which is still recovering from decades of conflict and numerous natural disasters.![]()
