MALI: The ongoing blockade shows that JNIM is increasing its influence further south than ever before. This situation might push Mali’s junta, led by President Assimi Goïta, to start negotiations. Alternatively, similar to what happened in 2012, militant advances could lead to a coup. While it’s less likely that JNIM will seize power, it remains a possibility and could turn Mali into Africa’s version of Afghanistan. This would be like the Taliban taking over Kabul in 2021, allowing terrorists to train and operate freely in a safe environment.
How did we get to this point? What would happen if jihadists took control in Mali? A takeover by JNIM would mark the first time an al-Qaeda group has gained power in a country, which would have significant regional and often overlooked global effects. This could be a key moment in Mali’s long struggle against insurgency and may signal the beginning of the end for the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which includes Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, as well as Russian influence in the area. In the long run, having JNIM in charge would increase the risks of international terrorism.
- Pray that God will intervene to stop the spread of violence and instability in Mali. Ask for divine protection over civilians, wisdom for leaders, and the breaking of every plan of destruction by armed groups. Pray that peace—rooted in justice—will prevail across the nation and the wider Sahel (The Holy Bible, Psalm 46:9).
- Pray for Mali’s leaders to receive wisdom, courage, and discernment from God as they face critical decisions. Ask that no coup, extremist takeover, or foreign manipulation succeed. Pray that God raises leaders who work for peace, unity, and protection against terrorism in Mali and the region (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 2:6).
