ALGERIA: Algeria has proposed a new law that aims to bring platforms like Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram under direct legal control. This move seeks to enhance digital regulation and boost national sovereignty.

The suggested law would require major digital platforms operating in Algeria to set up local offices and appoint legal representatives within the country. These platforms must remove any content that violates the law within 24 hours after receiving an official notice. The bill also bans the publication of materials that offend public morals, promote violence, or include pornographic content. It applies to apps with over one million monthly users in Algeria, ensuring that larger platforms follow local rules.

Additionally, the draft law requires that user data be stored in Algeria and that regular transparency reports be sent to national authorities. It also proposes establishing an independent regulatory body supervised by the Presidency to monitor digital activities and ensure accountability. If this law is approved, it would represent a major step toward strengthening Algeria’s digital independence, protecting users—especially minors—from harmful online material, and promoting greater transparency in social media management.

  • We pray that the Algerian government will be wise, fair, and honest as they put digital laws into effect. Ask God to help leaders balance national sovereignty with freedom of expression, ensuring that the regulations promote truth, morality, and public goodwill (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 1:8).
  • Lord, we pray that this newly drafted law will effectively protect citizens, especially children and youth, from harmful, violent, or immoral online content. Ask God to raise digital platforms that promote righteousness, peace, and wholesome values (The Holy Bible, Psalm 101:3).
