A survey of over 1,000 Bhutanese youth working abroad found that career growth and low wages in Bhutan push many to seek jobs overseas. Most are working in Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, and Bahrain, mainly in service and sales sectors. About 45% now earn significantly more than before, but job satisfaction is only moderate.
Female workers make up 63%, reflecting demand in retail and hospitality. Though most workers received briefings before leaving, many still feel unprepared for challenges abroad. Issues reported include delayed salaries, long hours, and contract changes after arrival. Some also had their passports withheld, limiting job change or return options. While transportation support rated well, overtime pay and salary increases received poor ratings.
Abba Father, we pray for Bhutanese youth working overseas. May You protect them from exploitation and ensure they are treated fairly, with justice and dignity. In Jesus’ name. Amen (The Bible, Isaiah 1:17).
Lord, bless these workers with strength, peace, and provision. Open doors for better opportunities and ensure their sacrifices bring lasting fruit (The Bible, Philippians 4:19).
