Somalia: On Monday, Al-Shabaab militants took control of the strategic town of Moqokori in central Somalia after fierce battles with government forces and allied clan militias. Located in the Hiran region of Hirshabelle state, Moqokori was one of the first towns liberated by Somali forces during a significant offensive that began in the summer of 2022. Its capture represents a major setback for the federal government’s efforts to regain territory from the al-Qaeda-affiliated group. Al-Shabaab announced their takeover of Moqokori and released photos of their fighters patrolling the area. The group stated that they killed 47 government soldiers and injured many others during the clashes. Local sources indicate that the militants are now moving towards Mahas, one of the largest and most strategically important towns in the region. Mahas has been under government control for more than ten years and was previously occupied by Ethiopian troops until their withdrawal last year.

  • Lord, we pray for peace in Moqokori and the surrounding regions of Somalia, asking for protection and strength for the government forces and local communities as they face the threat of violence and instability (The Holy Bible, Exodus 14:14).
  • Lord, we pray for the healing and recovery of those affected by the violence, including the injured and bereaved families. May they find comfort and hope amid the turmoil and be supported by their communities (The Holy Bible, Psalm 34:18).
