Senegal: France has transferred a military base to Senegal as part of a larger withdrawal of its troops from the West African nation. Senegal’s President Bassirou Dioumaye Faye announced late last year that France, the former colonial power, must close its military bases in Senegal by 2025. This process began in March with the initial transfers to Senegalese authorities. On Tuesday, France returned a military communications center located in Rufisque, near Dakar, according to the French embassy in Senegal. The center had been responsible for communications along the southern Atlantic coast since 1960. Following its independence in 1960, Senegal remained one of France’s most dependable African allies. However, Faye, who has been in office since 2024, has committed to treating France like any other foreign partner. Consequently, all Senegalese personnel working for French troops in the country are set to be dismissed starting July 1.
- Lord, we pray for a smooth and peaceful transition of military responsibilities from France to Senegal, that it may strengthen the sovereignty of Senegal and foster stability in the region (The Holy Bible, Matthew 5:9).
- Lord, we pray that the leadership of Senegal, under President Bassirou Dioumaye Faye, would be granted wisdom and unity as they navigate this change and build new partnerships, ensuring the welfare and security of their nation (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 11:14).
