On Saturday, around 20,000 people from the Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam protested in Dhaka, Bangladesh. They were against new government plans to give women equal rights. These plans include making marital rape a crime, giving women equal rights to property and parenting, and helping more women get into politics. The Women’s Affairs Reform Commission made these suggestions after a new government took over last year. Hefazat says gender equality goes against their beliefs and wants the commission to be shut down. They plan more protests if their demands are not met. The government is being asked to protect women’s rights and support the changes.
Abba Father, we pray for justice and dignity for every woman and girl in Bangladesh. Give strength to those fighting for their rights. May fairness and compassion lead the way, and may every voice be heard and respected (The Bible, Micah 6:8).
Lord, grant boldness and wisdom to the leaders of Bangladesh. Let them stand firm in truth and justice, defending the rights of the vulnerable and guiding the nation with courage and integrity (The Bible, Proverbs 31:8).
