Day 17
China
COVID-19 cases have surged again in China with millions of people living under strict lockdown restrictions. This has resulted in the closure of some factories, and the disruption of the transport of goods across the country towards ports. Rising costs of living around the world, the long-term impact of the pandemic, made worse by things like the war in Ukraine which drives prices up, even more, means some analysts are pointing toward a possible global recession. Pray for God’s power to be at work in China, in its government and leadership, and in its millions of people. “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” (The Bible, Revelation 1:8).

The world’s most populous country, China is also the world’s second-largest land area. With a focus on nationalism, the Communist government tries to maintain social order by prohibiting large meetings and some social media sites. Mission organizations say that the church is the largest social force in China not controlled by the Communist Party. Authorities have continued their harshest crackdown on Christianity since the Cultural Revolution. Many expatriate Christian workers have had to leave as a result. Even the Bible is being “rewritten” to better reflect the government’s communist worldview.
