Maldives: On April 13, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration announced a decision to implement a smoking ban for future generations starting in 2007. The necessary legislative changes to enforce this ban, proposed by PNC parliamentarian Ali Ashraq from Kinbidhoo, were introduced in Parliament on Tuesday morning. The bill aims to prohibit the consumption and sale of tobacco products to anyone born after January 1, 2007.
Additionally, the ban includes restrictions on selling tobacco through channels where the buyer’s age cannot be confirmed, such as vending machines, online sales, or delivery services. According to the bill, it is the legal obligation of sellers to ensure that buyers are of legal age to purchase tobacco products. If sellers are unable to verify a buyer’s age, they must check the buyer’s national ID card or other official identification documents.
- Lord, we pray that the younger generation will understand and respect the new smoking law in the Maldives. We pray that You will redeem the youth from all the snares of the evil one (The Holy Bible, Titus 2:12).
- Lord, we pray for the government of Maldives to promote and educate all its citizens about living healthy lifestyles and bring awareness about the risks of smoking (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 4:23).
