Sex workers in Bhutan face severe challenges, including social stigma, discrimination, violence, and lack of legal protection. Criminalization of sex work discourages them from reporting crimes due to fear of arrest. Many sex workers express a willingness to leave the profession if provided with upskilling opportunities, financial support, and legal aid.
A representative working with sex workers emphasized the urgent need for legal reforms that prioritize safety, allowing sex workers to report violence without fear of self-incrimination. Many advocate for decriminalization of sex work, except for third parties like pimps, to reduce exploitation while maintaining safeguards against human trafficking.
Economic empowerment is a key factor in enabling sex workers to transition to alternative livelihoods. Many seek business training, mentorship, and access to microfinance, as financial instability is a major reason for entering sex work.
The stigma surrounding sex work further isolates individuals, affecting their mental health and well-being. Laws disproportionately target sex workers rather than their clients, deepening feelings of shame, social exclusion, and vulnerability to abuse.
- Protection & Justice – Pray for legal reforms that protect sex workers from violence and allow them to report crimes without fear of arrest (The Bible, Psalm 82:3 ).
- Economic Opportunities – Ask God to open doors for sex workers seeking alternative livelihoods through business training and financial support (The Bible, Jeremiah 29:11).
- Breaking the Stigma – Pray for a transformation in societal attitudes toward sex workers, replacing judgment with compassion and support (The Bible, Luke 6:37).
- Healing & Restoration – Pray for emotional and spiritual healing for those suffering from trauma, shame, and isolation (The Bible, Isaiah 61:1).
