Thailand is facing a serious ageing crisis. Birth rates have dropped sharply, with fewer than 500,000 babies born in 2024, the lowest in over 70 years. At the same time, the number of elderly people is rising fast. By 2033, 28% of the population will be elderly, creating a heavy burden on fewer working-age people. This shift threatens the economy with labour shortages, slower growth, higher welfare costs, and possible financial collapse. Experts warn that if reforms are not made soon, Thailand could lose competitiveness, face rising inequality, and fall behind neighbours like Vietnam. Solutions include raising the retirement age, encouraging private savings, attracting skilled foreign workers, and investing in high-tech industries. Without action, the economy may slow further, and the middle class will struggle. Leaders agree: urgent structural changes are needed to avoid long-term decline and ensure a better future for all.
Pray for the government of Thailand to take action to protect the elderly population and to improve workforce management in the country. (The Holy Bible, Psalm 118:25).
Pray for wise counsel for the authorities to devise new ideas to boost Thailand’s economy and address the country’s ageing crisis. Pray for the LORD to bless the nation with hope and a bright future (The Holy Bible, Psalm 31:15).
