SENEGAL: Senegal’s media industry is dealing with a serious financial crisis due to cuts in public funding and a drop in advertising income. At the heart of this issue is the restructuring of Youssou N’Dour’s Futurs Médias group, but other private companies are also struggling and seeking help from the government. The Futurs Médias group (GFM), which owns major Senegalese media outlets like the newspaper L’Observateur, radio station RFM, and television channel TFM, claims it is facing an “unprecedented” crisis. With advertising revenue falling sharply, print sales decreasing, costs rising, and changes in taxes, they are under significant pressure. Senegal’s media plays a crucial role in promoting press freedom throughout West Africa since it has one of the most vibrant press systems in a region where journalists face many challenges. In contrast, neighboring countries like Niger and Mali have weaker economies. This allows Senegal’s media to address broader regional topics and reach audiences beyond its own borders.

  • Lord, we pray for the media outlets in Senegal, especially for Futurs Médias and other struggling companies. We ask for divine intervention to restore their financial stability, that they may continue to contribute to press freedom and truth in society. May advertisers return, and may public funding be restored to support their vital work (The Holy Bible, Joshua 1:9).
  • Lord, we pray for the journalists and media personnel in Senegal who are navigating this difficult landscape. We pray for their strength, resilience, and courage in pursuing truth and integrity in their reporting. May they be guided by wisdom and be protected in their efforts (The Holy Bible, Deuteronomy 31:8).
