A coalition of Christian and human rights activists picketed outside the Eritrean Embassy in Washington, D.C., to present a letter demanding the release of seven Christian church leaders imprisoned in Eritrea for more than 20 years without trial. The leaders, who include Orthodox priests and evangelical pastors, suffer from severe health issues brought on by unbearable prison conditions. The letter requested Eritrea to uphold its own constitution and international law safeguarding religious freedom. Nevertheless, the Eritrean Embassy did not accept the letter or communicate with the protestors. Embassy staff shut down the gate and disregarded successive pleas to take in the message. Protesters were dismayed, stating the denial indicated the Eritrean government’s reluctance to hear or display fundamental respect for human rights. Numerous exiled Eritreans and relatives of the imprisoned leaders participated in the demonstration. Eritrea is infamous for extreme repression of religion, with more than 400 Christians reportedly still incarcerated for their beliefs.
Almighty GOD, raise Deborahs, Baraks, and Gideons among the Eritrean Christians to fight for their rights and freedom. Raise the victory banner for the oppressed believers in the country (The Holy Bible, Judges 6:14).
Pray for the Eritrean leader, Isaias Afwerki, to have a personal encounter with the King, the LORD of hosts, sitting on the Throne. Pray for him to surrender to the Will and Call of the LORD as Isaiah the prophet did (The Holy Bible, Isaiah 6:1-8).
