A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Afghanistan along the Pakistan border late on the evening of 31st August’2025, doing extensive damage. The epicenter lay 27km west of Jalalabad in Nangarhar province, at a shallow 8km depth, thus being more dangerous. Nine people died at least, and 25 were injured, and the casualty list is likely to grow. A second, though minor, quake measuring 4.5 magnitude hit 20 minutes later. Whole villages in Kunar province had been reported leveled, and individuals were buried under the rubble. The mud and rock houses of this region are particularly susceptible, and the earthquake struck while the majority were still sleeping. Strong tremors were also experienced in regions of Pakistan, such as Lahore, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Rescue efforts are underway, but at a slow pace because of limited communications and terrain. This region is susceptible to earthquakes because it sits on a significant tectonic plate boundary. In 2023, deadly quakes in Afghanistan claimed thousands of lives.
Pray for wise counsel and international support to enable the authorities to expedite rescue operations in the earthquake-affected regions of Afghanistan. Pray for the quick and safe rescue of the people trapped under rubble (The Holy Bible, Psalm 35:17).
Pray for the LORD’s comfort for the families of the deceased earthquake victims in Afghanistan. Pray for the LORD’s healing power upon all the injured victims (The Holy Bible, Psalm 107:20).
