Globally, Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) cause 41 million deaths yearly, mostly in low- and middle-income countries. In Bhutan, 72% of deaths are due to NCDs, with cardiovascular diseases alone causing 28%. Risk factors include tobacco use (31.4%), harmful alcohol consumption (40.2%), low fruit and vegetable intake (74.6%), physical inactivity (18.3%), high blood pressure (30.3%), and rising diabetes cases. The Ministry of Health acknowledges challenges in changing habits due to cultural norms and environment. To combat this, Bhutan launched the Quad 80 strategy: 80% screening, 80% follow-up, protocol-based management, and 80% control of blood pressure and glucose. This initiative aligns with Bhutan’s 13th Five-Year Plan and SDG 3.4, aiming to cut premature NCD deaths by one-third by 2030.

Abba Father, help the people of Bhutan make wise choices avoiding tobacco and alcohol, eating well, and staying active to honor You with their bodies (The Holy Bible, 1 Corinthians 6:19).

Lord, we pray for healing for all who suffer from NCDs in Bhutan and around the world. Give them strength, comfort, and access to the care they need (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).
