On August 21, charities including Open Doors UK & Ireland launched a campaign calling for the release of seven Eritrean pastors jailed for 21 years without charges. The campaign, marking the UN Day for Victims of Religious Violence, is in partnership with Voices 4 Justice. Eritrea only recognizes three Christian groups, Catholic, Orthodox, and Lutheran, while others face arrest, torture, and prison in harsh conditions, including shipping containers. Even within recognized churches, some leaders face persecution. The seven detained pastors include Orthodox and Evangelical leaders held in a high-security prison with no trial, no legal help, and no family visits. Some were arrested during raids or at checkpoints. Many of their families have suffered greatly or fled the country. Eritrea sees independent churches as threats to state control. Over 120 Christians have been jailed in 2024 alone. Supporters held a peaceful protest at the Eritrean Embassy in London, urging global action and prayer.
Pray for the divine protection upon all the Christians in Eritrea from harm and violence. Pray that the Holy Spirit of GOD will empower and encourage all Eritrean believers facing oppression. Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of all the imprisoned Christians in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 147:3).
Pray for more religious freedom and freedom of Worship in Eritrea. Pray that the government will act impartially, ensuring equal protection for all, regardless of religion (The Holy Bible, Exodus 23:2).
