Vietnam is facing a serious human rights crisis. The government has more than 170 political prisoners, many in poor health and needing medical care. People like Nguyen Thai Hung and Le Dinh Luong were jailed for peacefully speaking out or supporting human rights. Vietnam uses a strict law called Article 331 to punish those who criticize the government online. Since 2018, many people have been sentenced under this law for discussing issues like religious freedom, land rights, and corruption. The government does not allow free speech or protests and often punishes activists and social media users. Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, will visit Vietnam soon. Human rights groups, activists, and some Australian lawmakers are urging her to speak up about these issues in public. Private talks in the past have not worked. If Vietnam does not improve its human rights record, it could hurt its relationship with Australia. Respecting human rights will help both the Vietnamese people and this partnership.

Pray for the authorities to uphold the justice, rights, and freedoms of the civil society in Vietnam. Pray for the lawmakers to cancel the oppressive laws that impact the fundamental rights and beliefs system in the country (The Holy Bible, Psalm 43:1).

Pray for freedom of speech and expression in Vietnam. Pray for the immediate and unconditional release of all the imprisoned victims (The Holy Bible, Psalm 102:19-21).

Pray for friendly and peaceful relations between Vietnam and Australia. Pray for the improved human rights record in Vietnam (The Holy Bible, Zechariah 6:13).
