CHINA: Flooding claimed the lives of 31 residents at an elderly care home located on the outskirts of Beijing. Videos showed emergency teams navigating through water that reached their chests as they worked to rescue those trapped inside the facility in the Miyun District. Many of the deceased were reportedly unable to move. Local officials acknowledged that there were “gaps in emergency planning” and described the event as a painful lesson, calling it a “wake-up call.” In total, 44 people have lost their lives due to flooding in Beijing, which has occurred during a summer marked by extreme weather across China. Earlier this month, record heatwaves affected the eastern regions, while separate floods impacted the southwestern part of the country.
- Lord, we pray for comfort and healing for the families of the 31 residents lost in the elderly care home and all those affected by the flooding. May they find solace in their time of grief and strength to carry on amid tragedy (The Holy Bible, John 14:27).
- Lord, we pray for local officials and emergency response teams to learn from this tragedy and to improve disaster preparedness and response strategies. May they be granted wisdom and resources to effectively protect their communities in the future (The Holy Bible, Proverbs 23:22).
